Proper care and storage of your sterling silver jewelry means you will have many years of pleasure and your jewelry will continue to look like new. Sterling silver will tarnish over time and with a little care will continue to look beautiful. With some pieces, you may even wish to leave some "color" to enhance the contrasts or aged appearance of your jewelry

Types of Cloths/Brushes
Because sterling silver is a relatively soft metal, it will scratch easily. For best results use only use only soft, lint-free 100% cotton cloth. Terry cloth, synthetic fabrics or any coarse cloth may cause fine surface scratches which will trap tarnish, dirt and polish. This will cause your jewelry to lose its luster and appear duller over time.

You may clean your silver jewelry with a very soft brush, like a baby's toothbrush, a horsehair brush or brushes sold for this purpose. Some have successfully used mushroom brushes. The bristles of the brush must be very soft and used gently. There's no place for rough treatment or harsh scrubbing if you wish to preserve the luster of your jewelry.

Anti-tarnish polishing cloths are available and are very inexpensive. These are both handy and easy to use. However, if your jewelry includes gem stones, you'll need to be careful not to rub the stone(s) with the cloth. It could, over time, damage the stone.

Types of Cleaners
For the same reasons, a soft cloth is necessary � so is a soft, gentle cleanser. There are several options available.

For light cleaning, a mild detergent and warm water will often do the trick. Just make sure that you are using a lint-free soft cotton cloth to gently clean your jewelry. Once cleaned and rinsed thoroughly, gently dry completely before storing.

You can also purchase a silver cleaning dip � just make sure that you do not immerse the stone. Gently wipe with a soft cloth and rinse with cool water. Always make sure your jewelry is completely dry before storing.

There are a number of excellent quality silver polishes and pastes that you may wish to use for pieces that are more heavily soiled. Again, do not rub the polish on the gem stone as it may dull the surface over time. Be sure to rinse your piece thoroughly and remove all polish or paste. If your jewelry is a plain silver piece, with no gem stone, you may want to use a silver polish spray.

Ultrasonic cleaners are not recommended for any silver jewelry with gem stones and particularly any that are porous, like turquoise. The cleaner may harm the stone. If your silver jewelry has no setting, then you may use an ultrasonic cleaner.

How to Clean
If you've ever noticed a black car that has been repeatedly hand washed, you'll notice the circular scratches that inevitably show. Keep that in mind when you're cleaning your jewelry. Use a lengthwise gentle motion to wipe your jewelry clean rather than a circular one. Any surface scratches that occur will be less noticeable. Make sure that you rinse your jewelry completely and gently dry with a clean, soft cloth.

How to store
Storing each piece of silver jewelry separately will reduce the amount of scratching that occurs in a jewelry box. Using an airtight zipped bag � plastic or specially purchased anti-tarnish bags � will help reduce tarnishing over time.

Silver jewelry is meant to be worn. Actually our body oils act as a barrier to tarnish � most of the problem will come in storing the jewelry. A little consistent care will go a long way to keeping your sterling silver jewelry beautiful for a lifetime. But if you're like most of us and get busy with other things, it's nice to know that silver jewelry is quite forgiving.

I ordered this on Monday and it was here the very next day! It is a small pendant. When i read the dimensions I knew it would be on the small side, but I was still surprised by its petiteness. The measurements are a little off, i measured it with my ruler and it is about 15mm long, and 10mm wide. It sparkles a lot and is very pretty, though the rose gold heart is not nearly as rosy as it appears in the picture, its more of a peach color. It comes on an 18" chain. I think part of the reason the pendant seems so small is that its size is split between two hearts instead of being one bigger heart, but its a nice necklace. I'm happy with it. I wear it every day. The chain is thin and the more I wear this pendant the more I love it. It's cute and small and simple.

When I consider a question, the answer is straight up and honest based on information from the question. This one presents a dilemma of sorts! The markings are what should be there for 18k gold. The only thing suspect there is the double marks, including both 18k and 750. This is not a critical point but most Italian jewelry is only marked with one or the other mark.

Sure, some exceptions occur and when the bracelet was made "might" be a reason for both marks. European jewelry was marked with numerical stamps (i.e. 750) before those marks became accepted standards with consumers in the USA. Who knows the reason for both marks? Generally, the maker's mark is (by law) next to the quality mark. Is there a maker's mark or some indication besides "Italy" for a manufacturer? If not, then the bracelet is truly suspect.

The marks are right but the acid test showed green, the typical result of a gold-filled or plated article with a base metal like brass underneath. The green comes from reaction with acid and the copper element in the underlying metals. Gold items of 10k to 18k and higher simply do not show green. This is part of the dilemma. The double safeties also are a small problem, since costume jewelry generally does not have good quality clasps or double safeties.

Now, we have to question if the acid test was done correctly and on what part of the bracelet. It is possible that the bracelet is not gold and does have gold clasp parts, if attached with loops (jump rings) and not connected by soldering directly to the bracelet.

Where is the quality stamps located? Are the markings on the back only on the clasps parts or located somewhere else? An acid test done correctly will involve not only the clasp parts but some other area of the jewelry item. The item is rubbed on a slate stone hard enough to dig slightly into the jewelry and place both surface gold and deeper metal on the stone. Or, the acid is applied directly to the piece. Either way, the result will not be green for gold items.

Without the bracelet in hand, I simply cannot tell if it is really 18k gold. If not, then apparently enough trouble was taken by the manufacturer to make it look authentic and be sold falsely as 18k when it is not.

I suggest you have the bracelet checked at different jewelers. If the results are the same, then we must conclude the fine lady who owned the bracelet was perhaps duped or might have received it as a gift from someone who did not know. I wish I could give you a more joyous answer but another test is really needed to find out for certain. Please use a business with no interest in purchasing the bracelet to avoid possible deception. The bracelet should be tested in more than one location on the bracelet.

Sorry for news that is a bit to the unwanted side. Please have the second test done and that should conclude it. Even if it's not 18k, consider the gift given as what it "might" have been and wear it with that in mind, costume or not.
